Moving Checklist

The following timeline of tips will help ensure that the move to your new SummerHill Home goes smoothly.
|
|

- If hiring a moving company, reserve your date. Arrange for an agent to survey your goods and provide a written estimate.
- Give notice to your landlord if you are currently renting.
- Register your children in their new schools. Information about schools is available at each community's Information Center.
- Pick-up a Mover’s Guide from the post office and file change-of-address forms for:
- Friends and family;
- Banks, insurance, and credit card companies;
- Newspaper and magazines subscriptions;
- Doctors, dentists, and other providers;
- Past employer (for W-2 forms).
- Prepare for Packing
- Survey your belongings and sell/donate unwanted items.
- Use up perishable foods (and buy only what you will use before moving day).
- Start Packing
- Clearly label boxes with their contents and the room they are to be placed in. For example: “KITCHEN: Dishes”; GARAGE: Tools”; “BEDROOM: Lamps.”
- Label boxes to be unpacked first with “OPEN FIRST.”
- Label fragile boxes "FRAGILE" and place them all in one spot so movers will know to give them special attention.
|

|
- Pack important documents in a moveable filing box. Include passports, birth certificates, vehicle titles, insurance papers, financial records, medical records, and school records. If you are moving a long distance, be sure to empty your safe deposit box.
- Arrange to hook-up utilities in your new home. A contact list for the utility companies will be provided at the Information Center to help you with this process.
- Disconnect utilities at your old residence and collect deposit refunds. Call cable, electric, gas, telephone, garbage, and water companies. Be sure to give your new address to receive final bills.
|

|
- Pack suitcases with immediate clothes and toiletries.
- Pack an essentials box for easy access to cleaning supplies, light bulbs, trash bags, hand soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and a first aid kit. Include energy bars and bottled water.
- Tune up your car and change the oil in preparation for the drive (if it is a long distance move).
|

|
- Unplug TV sets (they should move at room temperature), and air out refrigerators or other appliances.
- Have mover’s payment available (check their payment policy).
- Prepare a simple breakfast for the morning.
|

|
- Strip and pack bedding before the movers arrive.
- Gather all your keys in a zippered pouch.
- Supervise the movers to ensure nothing is left behind.
- Lock up all windows and doors.
