Getting your home organized can be a big task. It\u2019s easy to\nget overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start. There are a lot of tips,\ntricks, and guides (we\u2019ve written a few ourselves), but organizing your home\ncomes down to a few simple principles that can be used to organize every room\nin your house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evaluate and plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you start any project, you need to make a plan.  You may be excited to dive right in and start\norganizing but you\u2019ll quickly become overwhelmed and quit midway if you don\u2019t\nhave a plan in place. Evaluate the space you\u2019re organizing and determine its\npurpose. How will the room be used? This is especially important for\nmulti-purpose rooms like the kitchen, living room, and possibly a flex space\nlike a guest room that also functions as an office. Determining how a room will\nfunction will establish which items ultimately belong in that space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to planning out your space, create a plan for\nwhich rooms you\u2019ll work on. You don\u2019t have to organize your entire house all at\nonce. In fact, it\u2019s better if you tackle it in phases. Breaking down your\norganization tasks into focused projects will increase the probability that\nyou\u2019ll finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sort it out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s where things will get messy! Begin by taking\neverything out. Look at each item and place them in one of three piles: keep\n(items that will stay in the room), relocate (these items belong in a different\nroom), and purge (anything you\u2019re not keeping, whether they\u2019re broken or not). Don\u2019t\nbe discouraged \u2013 things will get worse but they will get better so keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purge what you don\u2019t need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now it\u2019s time to deal with that purge pile? This part is usually the hardest for people, especially if they\u2019re the sentimental type. Review the items in your purge pile and do another round of sorting. As you assess each item, ask yourself some questions to help make your decision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
